Bashundhara Group’s proposal to set up a 5000-bed hospital to help in the treatment of patients infected with the deadly coronavirus was accepted on Sunday by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The premier gave the go-ahead after Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan sent a written proposal to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), expressing the desire to set up hospitals amid the spread of the deadly coronavirus.Managing Director of Bashundhara Group Sayem Sobhan Anvir formally handed over the proposal to Principal Secretary Dr Ahmed Kaikaus at the PMO to get the approval of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bashundhara Group proposed that a trade centre with 1,50,000 square feet and four convention centres with 90,000 square feet can be turned into hospitals as the country has been fighting to contain the spread of coronavirus.
The premier welcomed the offer and thanked the group for its humanitarian gesture. The group also donated Tk 100 million to the PM’s relief fund to help the government facing the upcoming challenges.
The COVID-19, first reported in China’s Wuhan, has been spread to nearly 200 countries across the globe.
After locking down Wuhan, the Chinese government built 1000-bed hospital to treat patients infected with the coronavirus.
Considering the upcoming challenges, the Bashundhara Group proposed the government that it would build the largest hospital in South Asia to pave ways for treating the patients with the deadly bug.“We believe that the move will play a significant role and help you (Prime Minister) in facing the future challenge of providing treatment to the patients with coronavirus,” Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, chairman of the Bashundhara Group, wrote in his proposal.
The group also expressed solidarity with the courageous and practical moves of the government to tackle the coronavirus situation.
“At present, some 197 countries are struggling in the figh against the bug. Bangladesh is not an exception,” he said.
Praising the premier highly for her government’s pragmatic decisions, he said the virus was yet to become a pandemic in Bangladesh due to right measures taken by the government.
The Bahsundhara Group, like in previous years, has decided to stand beside you to maintain the prevailing situation, he said.
Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan said Bangladesh has been placed in a dignified position in the comity of nations due to your successful leadership for the past 11 years.
“At present, many countries are passing a critical time in treating the deadly bug. You have already taken a number of practical measures in facing the challenge. We want to assist you so that you can face the challenge more successfully,” he said.
The BG chairman said that the convention centres, equipped with modern facilities, are situated at Kuril and these can be turned into hospitals.
“We think that if the move is taken, the convention centres can be turned into full-fledged hospitals within a week,” he said.
The BG Group hopes that the government will agree with the proposal to treat the patients with the coronavirus.
“Our expectation is that you (Prime Minister) will agree with the proposal at this critical juncture of the country and direct the authorities concerned for implementing it,” he said.
“Bashundhara Group has been with you and it will remain beside you in your every initiative. We believe that the nation’s welfare lies in your success,” he added.
